Baku in Summer: How to Survive and What to See

Updated: 08.05.2026. Currency: 1 AZN = $0.59

Summer in Baku means white heat (+35–42°C). The city follows a siesta rule: between 13:00 and 17:00 there is nothing to do outdoors.

Season Overview 2026

  • Heat: humidity rises in July-August. Look for places marked «AC»
  • Evening peak: the city comes alive after 19:00. The Boulevard is packed until 02:00
  • Wind: the «Khazri» (north wind) brings relief but can kick up sand on beaches

Morning: Before the Heat (08:00 — 12:00)

Icherisheher

The Old City is the only district where narrow streets create natural shade.

  • Maiden Tower — 15 AZN. Go right at opening (09:00) before the stone heats up

Breakfast: order «Kyukyu» (herb omelette) or a classic Azerbaijani breakfast with shor cheese and honey.

Afternoon: Survival Plan (12:00 — 17:00)

Indoors only — powerful air conditioning required.

  • Heydar Aliyev Center — 15 AZN. Huge cool white space, perfect for photos and museum
  • Carpet Museum — 15 AZN. Unusual building shaped like a rolled carpet on the Boulevard. Great AC inside

Seasonal lunch menu:

  • Ovdukh — Azerbaijani cold soup on matsoni. Best relief from the heat
  • Watermelon with cheese (Peynir-Qarpız) — sounds odd but this is the main summer dessert in Baku

Evening: Sea and Promenades (17:00 — 22:00)

Absheron Beaches

Swimming in the city bay is not allowed. Take Bolt taxi (~10–15 AZN):

  • Bilgah / Sea Breeze — premium beaches, clean water, entry from 25–40 AZN
  • Mardakan / Shuvelan — more affordable, many family water parks
  • Nardaran — clean sea, more conservative atmosphere

Seaside Boulevard

Everything operates in the evening:

  • Bicycle rental — 10 AZN/hour
  • Boat ride around the bay — 10 AZN (sea breeze is the only relief in the evening)

Summer 2026 Checklist

  • Water: buy bottled only (Badamli/Sirab). Tap water is not for drinking
  • Clothing: natural linen or cotton
  • SPF: minimum 50+. Baku sun burns in 15 minutes
