Khinalug 2026: A Lost World at 2,335 Meters

Khinalug is one of the highest and oldest villages in Europe, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recognized by the UN as a "Best Tourism Village." The Khinalug people are a separate ethnic group with their own unique language understood by no one else in the world. Stone houses are built in cascades — the roof of one serves as the yard of another.

Logistics 2026: No Illusions

There is no direct transport from Baku. The route has two stages.

Stage 1 — bus Baku to Guba from the International Bus Terminal. Price 5 AZN, travel time 3 hours.

Stage 2 — Guba to Khinalug (60 km). Sedan cars are not allowed — steep serpentine road with constant rockfall risk. At Guba bus station, hire a local 4WD (Niva or UAZ) with a local driver. Price for the car round trip with waiting — 50–65 AZN. Best shared between 3–4 people.

What to See

Historical and Ethnographic Museum — collection of ancient artifacts, books and household items found in these mountains. Entry 15 AZN for foreign citizens.

Ancient Mosques — Abu Muslim Mosque (12th century) and Pirshomyard Mosque. Free entry. Strict dress code: covered shoulders and knees, women must wear a headscarf.

Ateshgah — the world's highest natural eternal fire, burning directly from the rock at ~3,000 meters. Reachable on foot (trekking) or by renting a horse from locals.

Where to Eat

There are no restaurants in Khinalug. The only option is lunch at a local home. Homemade lamb soup, Caucasian cheese, tandoor bread and mountain herb tea. Price 15–20 AZN per person. Cash only.
