Lahij 2026: The Medieval Coppersmith Village in the Mountains

Lahij is a historical and cultural reserve in the Ismayilli district. A highland village with unique medieval architecture: cobblestone streets, two-storey houses with wooden earthquake-resistant belts, and the ancient Kyurebend sewage system that has operated without major repair for 1,500 years. Since the 8th century, Lahij has been the main craft center of the Caucasus.

Logistics 2026: Serpentine and Risks

The road from Baku is 180 km. The first stretch along the Shamakhi highway is perfect, but the final 25 km after the Ismayilli turn is a narrow mountain road carved into rock along the Girdimanchay river canyon.

Main danger — rockfalls. Driving a rental car in rainy weather is strongly not recommended.

Minibus — direct Baku–Lahij minibus departs from the International Bus Terminal once daily in the morning. Price 9–11 AZN. Local buses from Ismayilli — 2–3 AZN.

Taxi — Bolt/Uber from Baku one way 75–90 AZN.

What to See

Craftsmen's Street (Hüseynov küçəsi) — the main pedestrian street with open coppersmith workshops. Come to listen to the rhythmic hammer beats and talk to the masters — many are 7th-generation craftsmen. Free entry. Handmade copper cezve — from 35–50 AZN, large decorative trays — from 150 AZN.

Local History Museum — housed in the former Agalu Mosque (19th century). Ancient weapons, carpets, tools and rare photographs. Entry 10 AZN for foreign citizens.

Suspension Bridge over Girdimanchay — at the village entrance. Extreme photos above the mountain torrent. Free entry.

What to Try

Lahij Tea Set — mountain thyme tea brewed with spring water in a copper samovar. Served with local jam (white cherry, blackberry) and lump sugar. Price 7–12 AZN at colourful teahouses on the main street.
